What do the mastery states mean?

Not started: no material yet. Learning: material exists but recall is shaky. Due: items are past their forgetting threshold. Strong: retention is above 0.9 and stable. Revu updates states after every session.

Can I manually mark a section as complete?

Yes, but we'll flag it if future recall fails. Mastery is a function of retention over time, so a one-off mark won't survive if the cards start lapsing.

How is this different from a progress bar?

A progress bar counts what you've done. Coverage Map tracks whether you'd recall it today. A section you crushed three weeks ago can move from Strong to Due without you ever touching it — because the memory is fading.

Will Revu alert me to emerging gaps?
